6 Tips To Take Your Writing Ability Up To The Next Level

Feb 12

Even if you have a way with words, crafting beautiful masterpieces isn’t easy. There are always a few things you can learn and it could take your work to the next level, so today I’d love to share with you some great tips I’ve picked up over the years. Sleep on it When you go to sleep at night you should make sure there is a notepad on your bedside table. Before you drift off into the dream world tell yourself you will come up with great writing ideas while you sleep. If you want it to happen your mind must know in advance. Once you wake up in the morning you should write down everything you can remember. Keep doing this every day and eventually you will catch great ideas you would never have thought of when fully conscious. Write like you talk Don’t sit down at your dining room table and try to come up with a fancy way to write something. Just let the words flow out naturally like you would say them if you were speaking. You have to understand why people fall in love with a book in the first place. They want to feel like someone is talking directly to them because it’s much easier to believe in what is happening. Even if you don’t believe you’re a skilled writer you will improve overnight once you start writing the way you speak. Cut everything out When you type your first draft you’ll always try to write down as many words as possible. I guess we all do it because we want to reach our minimum word count as quickly as possible. When your book contains far too many useless words it makes for a horrible reading experience, so you must take them all out before you publish anything. Keep your sentences as short as possible, use short words, and don’t let your paragraphs get too long. Let it rest for a few days A lot of people who publish stuff online don’t wait more than a few minutes before they share their work with the world. They convince themselves they’re doing something right, but sadly it never works out that way. After you’ve written something you should always wait at least 24hrs before you edit it because you will always find something you want to change. If you’ve already published it you’ll be...

It’s sometimes hard to sit down and write, so I’ve talked about a few locations people should check out if they want to boost their productivity. Do you ever find it difficult to sit down and write? Maybe you are struggling because of the location you’re in rather than the lack of ideas running through your head. Take a look at some of these locations you might want to try out if you want to become a lot more productive. Your local library Hopefully most people have a library close to their home because it’s a great place to work. Nobody can talk too loud which means you get to work in near silence. You also have access to tons of books if you want to research anything and you’ll have free access to the internet too. If your lucky you might even be able to grab tea and coffee from a cafe or vending machine. The only bad thing about a library is the fact you’ll only be able to sit there during the day while it’s open. A special room Most of your time will be spent writing at home, but this doesn’t mean you need to sit at the dining table writing all the time. Find somewhere that makes you feel comfortable and productive. In summer you might decide to write in the conservatory so you can enjoy the sun. You could even build a special writing room in the attic if you don’t use it for anything else. If you have a special place where you can write all the time you can decorate it using colors and photos that inspire you. A nice hotel room If you have any important projects to work on for a few days it might be a good idea to book a nice hotel room. You won’t even need to cook food because you can have it delivered straight to your room. There is also a good chance you’ll be a lot more productive because it costs money to rent a hotel room and if you sit around doing nothing you’ll be throwing it down the drain. Just remember to take everything with you otherwise you might have to take a trip back home. Coffee shops Some people love working in coffee shops even though they’re usually quite noisy. It might be because the noise relaxes them after a...

5 Ways To Set Up The Perfect Writing Space At Home

People will enjoy their writing more if they set up a special writing space at home, so I’ve given them a few tips that should help out. If you love writing at the moment you’ll love it even more once you set up a special writing space at home. This will be your sanctuary where you can escape from the world to lose yourself in your words. Here are a few ways you can guarantee your writing space is perfect. Choose your space wisely You can’t start setting up your writing space before you choose where it’s going to be situated. Think very carefully because you don’t want to change your mind a few months down the line. You want to choose the place where you’ll be most productive. That might mean being out of the way so everyone else in your family doesn’t bother you. Think very carefully about setting up your writing space near a window because you won’t want to stare at a wall for hours each day. Check what you’ve already got Before you start shopping for new writing supplies you should check what you’ve already got lying around the house. I know you’ll be excited and you will want to spend all your money on new notebooks and pens, but do you really need them? It’s just an easy way to waste money because the supplies you already have will work perfectly well. Once you’ve checked what you already have you can go out and buy everything you still need to get. Treat yourself to new toys Your writing space won’t be special if it’s just an old desk in the corner of your spare room. If you have the money you might want to go out and buy a nice desk. Get yourself a new computer if the one you use right now is getting a little old. Have you read anything about those standing desks everyone is going crazy about? If you write standing up it will be much better for your health and you’ll be more productive, plus you can lower the desk when you get tired. Make sure there is lots of light When you write at home you might not stick to daylight hours. If you already have a full-time job it will be impossible because you’ll need to sort out dinner when you get home. By the time...

5 Tips for Crafting an Amazing College Essay

5 Tips for Crafting an Amazing College Essay

Jan 06

When you’re in the process of applying to colleges, one of the things that you’re going to be required to do is write a college essay. In fact, this is one of the best ways for college admission departments to get a good idea of who you are and the special things that you have to bring to their institution. That said, being that a college essay is what gives most schools the first impression of you as an individual, it’s important that you craft one that is not just “good” but is absolutely amazing. If you’d like a few tips on how you can do that, check out the five that we have provided for you below: Read the instructions. You might think that this first tip is a given, but you might be surprised by how many college applicants fail to do things like answer the questions that are asked or respect the word count on their essays. Say for instance that in the essay portion of your application, you are asked to submit no more than 500 words but you end up writing 750 instead. You’re not impressing the school by showing that you can write more. You’re actually showing them that you disregarded their request. So yes, reading and following the instructions are especially vital. Think carefully about the topic. Although your college essay should come across as candid and sincere, there are a few topics that can actually prove to be off-putting and/or distasteful. Some of them would include if you happen to have a drug habit, if you’ve gone to jail, your political or religious views or the lessons that you’ve learned by having an active sex life. Also, try and avoid submitting travel journal excerpts as well. Colleges tend to get a lot of those and so they don’t usually stand out very much. Be honest but also humble. If you’ve accomplished a lot of impressive things over the course of your life and they are relevant to the topic of our essay, don’t be shy about sharing them. Simply make sure that it comes across that you are sharing what you’ve done as a way to illustrate a point, but not simply because you are bragging. Arrogance is not something that you want conveyed in a college essay. Have someone edit it. Even if you’ve been told by your former teachers...

If you are about to enter college and are looking for a scholarship, be prepared for writing a long essay. You may be require to write a ten page essay that will pale in comparison to the essays you were asked to write in high school or earlier. With this long of an essay, it can be difficult to keep track of a clear idea. However, there is a certain formula, and there is a certain way that you want to write a college scholarship essay that will not only get your point across, but that will also impress the admissions department of a certain college. Here are five tips for writing an effective college scholarship essay. Make sure that you write an outline. In most cases, your scholarship essay will be about you. However, what do you talk about when you write about you? Well, this is the reason why you don’t want to blindly sit down at the page and start writing. You want to make sure that you have a clear beginning, middle and end before you actual start filling your document with words. Think very clearly about what you want to talk about. As you are devising the outline, you also want to think about all the things you want to talk about that may impress a college scholarship advisory board. When it comes down to it, there may be a lot of things in your life that could potentially impress, but you don’t want to include all of them. This is the reason why you want to take some time to think and to select the best of the best. Don’t use words that are too big or verbose. In most cases, you can say exactly what you have to say – with impact – using short, concise, smart words. Just because you use big words doesn’t mean that you are smart. As you get older, you will realize that the most powerful statements were said without using a thesaurus. If you use too many big words, you could actually confuse the college admissions officer more than impress. So, put the thesaurus aside and try not to use the one built in to your computer. Pay attention to the instructions given by the college scholarship board. Sometimes, a college scholarship board will have a list of rules and instructions that you must follow when...
