5 Funky Ways To Come Up With Ideas When You’re Suffering From Writer’s BlockFeb 28
Are you one of those writers who can’t come up with an idea to save your life? I’m sure a lot of people have tried to help you get over your writer’s block, but try some of these wacky techniques because they work.
Look out of the window
The next time you’re sitting in a bus or train you should stare out of the window. You’ll pass lots of different scenery and if you let your imagination go wild you’ll come up with a number of great ideas. If you see other people walking along you should try to imagine where they’re going and what they’re doing. If you see any old buildings try to imagine how they came to be and what it must have been like for the people building them. I think you get the idea so just let you mind run free.
Take a walk through the forest
The forest is another great place where you can come up with lots of ideas, especially when you’re on your own and there isn’t another person around for miles. What will happen if you get lost and you can’t make your way home? What would you do if you ran into a dangerous animal and they started chasing you? If you’re close to a mountain you should try to climb up to the top because once you’re at the peak looking out at the world your mind tends to be in a meditative state where ideas come rolling out.
An alternative ending
You must have a few stories you love reading again and again. Take some of those stories and try to come up with alternate endings. The idea here is not to copy what has already been done before, but to come up with something wild and wacky. Even if your alternative endings don’t make any sense to the actual story they’ll create even more ideas and those ideas will create new ones. You need a prop to get to that stage and playing around with stories you already love is a great way to do it.
Interesting characters from the past
If you ask a lot of comedy writers who have very popular sketch shows they’ll tell you their characters all came from people they had met in previous walks of life. I’m sure you’ve came across a number of people who would fit in perfectly with a story you could write. It doesn’t need to be about the actual characters themselves, but it could be about the way they affected other people. When you’ve got some spare time on your hands you should definitely think back to the past to see what you can come up with.
Listen to people in the coffee shop
This one is maybe a little sneaky, but who cares if you can come up with lots of ideas because of it? People love to chat loudly in coffee shops and they’re not shy about discussing their problems with friends. They probably don’t care if the person behind them can hear everything they’re saying, but maybe they would if that person was you and you were sitting there with a notebook. Open your ears the next time you go for a coffee and some of the ideas that will pop into your head will be fascinating.
Never run out of ideas again
Nobody can ever truly run out of ideas. You just need to keep finding different ways to access them. I’m sure you’ve got a few of your own techniques you use regularly, but now you can try a few of these too. There are probably another thousand techniques once you get fed up of these ones.
